Harry/Draco Worldcup ... the roundup so far. [06 Apr 2008|07:07pm]
Well, I've spent a ridiculous amount of time reading the submissions that came out this week for hd_worldcup. Following are my top picks, so far ... of course, no one is reading this as I am new to IJ, but I figured I'd write someting up for posterity. It will be a short list, because I’m only reccing the VERY best. Note that all the authors are as yet unknown.

FICS

Title : Darkness Is Not the Absence of Light
For Team Canon, with the prompt Justice.
Wordcount 13,500, Rating : R. Warnings : None.
Summary : Harry only wants what's fair for Narcissa Malfoy. But Narcissa has other plans, and Draco is willing to go along with just about anything to stay out of Azkaban.

This was just brilliant. It’s set immediately after DH, and is very true to both Harry and Draco's characters. This works so well with canon : everyone is in character, the plot was great, and there was not the slightest hint of contrivance. Go read it!

Title : What could have been (and what was)
For Team Fanon, with the prompt Judgment.
Wordcount ~7000, Rating : R. Warnings : Infidelity.
Summary : Neither epilogue-compliant nor EWE; seven separate demonstrations that you can't stop the signal.

This story has a non-traditional structure that I really enjoyed. The narrative keeps winding back in a very effective way. In case that idea puts you off, it’s not pretentious at all. I really liked the conversations between Harry, Draco and Astoria and then Harry and Ginny. The author is very good at writing dialogue which is both nuanced and not out of the everyday.

Title : After Eden
For Team EWE, with the prompt Judgment.
Wordcount ~15000, Rating : NC-17. Warnings : None.
Summary : Life threatening injuries are an occupational hazard even for a seasoned Auror, but Harry Potter never considered the possibility of life altering injury. And why is it that Draco Malfoy has to be the one to help him?

I liked the premise of this fic, because it’s totally believable that Harry would undergo some kind of accident in his line of work. Draco here is removed from his canon-self, but since the fic is set when they’re 30ish, it works. The characterization is good, and the relationship is built up slowly and believably. Very nice indeed!

Title : Take a Sad Song (And Make it Better)
For Team Epilogue, with the prompt Judgment.
Wordcount is a monstrous 45,425, Rating : NC-17. Warnings : None. Fully DH-compliant.
Summary : The last thing Harry wants is to lose his kids.

This fic (novel?) is outstanding in every way. Brilliantly plotted and characterized, it’s a fully realized and developed story that would stand even without the romance, which is done so well. The characters act like real people, with all their petty squabbles and misunderstandings and annoyances, and it’s really refreshing to read. The premise here is that Harry and Ginny’s marriage is over because he cheated (with men). There are several subplots that all come together and really enrich the story. Plus : the Beatles, and a great sex scene! What are you waiting for?

ART

Title : The Well of Memory
For Team Canon, with the prompt Cups.
Rating : G. Warnings : Image heavy.
Summary : The suit of Cups corresponds to the Water element and the color Blue. It holds the deepness, the well of memory, the record of our existence. I find they also suit Harry and Draco's canon relationship quite well. Please enjoy!

This artwork is simply stunning. The interwoven scenes, the way it is rendered, the narrative : beautiful. Go and have a look!
